Neil Hickey – Escape Artist (EMX Management Presents)
By Rory Morgan | Published on Tuesday 13 August 2013
Entering the stage with the body language of an overly expressive chicken, Neil Hickey came across as more confessional than comical. The whole experience felt awkward to watch and Hickey seemed rather intimidated by his audience. He had a few glimmers of comical prowess, but his entire routine was littered with juvenile gags that failed to impress the audience. As a consequence, Hickey unintentionally came across as rather childish, and the lack of audience interaction made me feel like I was watching a child practice in the mirror. This was all rather disappointing: it’s clear that Hickey is excited by the stage, it just seems like he hasn’t found himself on it yet.
Pleasance Courtyard, until 26 Aug (except 13), 3.15pm.
