ED2013 3/5 Reviews ED2013 Comedy Reviews
Mixed Doubles (Mixed Doubles)
By Jonathan Mayo | Published on Wednesday 14 August 2013
This sketch performance by Mixed Doubles came across as safe, but popular, comedy. A noticeably older audience than at many Fringe shows appreciated pop references to ‘The Apprentice’, ‘Sex And The City’ and ‘Mario Kart’ by this tight foursome. Forgoing unnecessary costume changes, opting in the most part for black t-shirts and jeans, the comedy was carried solely by their acting. The show also included a number of surprisingly accurate impressions, including those of Andy Murray and Jools Holland, which were seamlessly incorporated into the sketches. It is certainly true that the show was well-honed and the dynamic between the performers worked well, but I didn’t find anything massively original on offer. An enjoyable hour, but they aren’t breaking any boundaries.
Just The Tonic at The Caves, until 25 Aug (not 13), 6.00pm.
