Maureen Younger – The Outsider (Maureen Younger / Scottish Comedy Festival)
By Alice Harrold | Published on Thursday 22 August 2013
Maureen Younger is a London-Scot who has spent her entire life as an outsider. She takes us through this struggle in a show which uncovers her identity as a black Scottish lesbian – despite her English accent, white skin and heterosexuality. The Scottish jokes carry on a bit and it’s easy to see why Younger doesn’t fit in with either of her nationalities, but she takes this all in her stride. Younger deals with the themes of appearance, parents, sexuality and feminism with her funny, tell-all style; and the message that it’s OK to be an outsider actually made the preachy speech at the finish a fair way to end the show.
Scottish Comedy Festival @ The Beehive Inn, until 25 Aug (not 9-18), 6.00pm.
