Lewis Schaffer Is Better Than You (Pay What You Want / Lewis Schaffer)
By Jonathan Mayo | Published on Thursday 8 August 2013
“Is this comedy?” Schaffer asked himself mid-set, and I share his doubt. Acutely aware that reviewers were in the audience, the continuous self-deprecating breakdown of why the show was a dismal failure started out as perversely interesting. But not funny. The interest quickly waned as it became apparent that Lewis Schaffer being ‘Better Than You’ revolves only around his American nationality, and an ability to outdo his self-description as “mildly racist”. Amid the paradoxical combination of jaded despair and moral superiority, I left the gig with an impression of someone armed with cutting wit, but unwilling to make proper use of it. It was always going to be easier with this dwindling crowd to play the irreverent, and Schaffer took the easy route.
Heroes @ The Hive, until 25 Aug (not 7, 14, 21), 8.00pm.
