Jody Kamali – Livewire – Free (Jody Kamali)
By Andy Leask | Published on Monday 26 August 2013
I could only watch with envious eyes as a steady trickle of punters flowed out of the room. ‘Livewire’ isn’t terrible, but it’s certainly not great either. Kamali charitably refers to his show as “experimental”, and in some ways he’s right. There were some funny moments; watching him play keepy-uppy with an empty plastic bag for three minutes was hilarious – far funnier than it has any right to be. But too many other gags didn’t work, and the uncomfortable, unsolicited and unwanted physical contact with the audience was ill-advised. There’s definitely a work in progress feel to Kamali’s comedy – part physical clowning, part Alan Partridge does CBBC presenter – but it’s just not polished enough to be effective.
Laughing Horse @ Bar 50, until 25 Aug, 4.45pm.
