Javier Jarquin – Joke Ninja (Javier Jarquin)
By Kyung Oh | Published on Monday 26 August 2013
Kiwi comedian Javier Jarquin speaks about a range of topics, including the rivalry between New Zealand and Australia, intimacy with his wife, growing up with a gruff father and how a zombie apocalypse would be preferable to the current state of affairs. Some jokes feel overly constructed and formulaic, and at times I could spot the punchline coming halfway through the joke. But he occasionally caught me off guard, making me (and the rest of the audience) laugh out loud. Jarquin is a fine observational comedian, a highlight being his routine about odd, inexplicable uses of language in Britain and back home. A likeable personality on stage, he provides an amusing hour of comedy.
Assembly Hall, until 25 Aug, 6.30pm.
