It’s Me Dayne (Dayne Rathbone)
By Clare Dolan | Published on Tuesday 27 August 2013
This is awkward comedy at its most uncomfortable and outrageous. At the start, the audience seem unable to decide whether they’re allowed to laugh. Two men decide not, leaving stony faced, and Rathbone admits “it’s not for everyone”. You’ll either be part of this show, or on the outside watching in disgusted and confused silence. Rathbone’s character displays a clash of morbid humour and childlike obliviousness – we are read poetry and forced into a quizzard, that is, a quiz about a lizard; and then the highlight, a children’s storybook turned into a play, which you may be part of wherever you sit. Tears of laughter will merge with tears of fear before you leave, completely unsure of what you’ve just been involved in.
Gilded Balloon Teviot, until 26 Aug, 7.45pm.
