Hannah Gadsby – Happiness is a Bedside Table
By Ian Freeman | Published on Thursday 22 August 2013
Don’t be fooled by the jovial title; this is not a particularly happy comedic show. Hannah Gadsby claims to have found solace in her bedside table, though in reality it’s a barely touched prop, used to spark off the show before we delve into the lowest points of her life. There are a couple of tales that are well rounded, with brilliantly funny endings; but for the most part the jokes are tame and don’t lead anywhere exciting. But despite the depressing tone, there are moments that are oddly inspirational; and the show ends on one of these, where Gadsby shows the extent to which she has conquered her biggest fear. As such, the audience leaves uplifted rather than enamoured.
Assembly Roxy, until 25 Aug (not 12, 19 Aug), 4.30pm.
