Gavin Webster – Don’t Give Money To Comic Relief And Other Opinions (Gavin Webster / The Stand Comedy Club)

By | Published on Friday 9 August 2013

The crucial point of Webster’s show is the “…and other opinions”. He spends an hour indirectly and hilariously making the point that it’s better to revel in misguided, short-sighted, liberal or even conservative views than to have none at all. This is an articulate and intelligent insight into the frustrations of a middle-aged punk. Luckily his confusingly apathetic bitterness towards the world is saved from feeling preachy by his constant acknowledgement of counter-points and the presence of a tongue firmly in cheek. If Sarah Millican is the Rhianna of the Geordie comedy world, Webster is Rage Against the Machine. Not content with the vacuous, he’s tackling the big stuff. Though it’s potentially abrasive, just be careful not to take him too seriously.

The Stand Comedy Club II, until 25 Aug (not 12), 6.00pm.
