Crunch The News (Bright Green & Lampoon Apathy / PBH’s Free Fringe)
By Joe Abel | Published on Thursday 8 August 2013
The quick turn-over of the 24 hour news cycle forces the focus of difficult topical shows such as this one onto the more superficially interesting events, the sort involving cats or contrived statistics. The compère struggles amiably to rein in the more forceful personalities among the panellists, and the muddled, rambling discussion, whilst landing more than one laugh, borders on indulgent. A mid-show discussion of Scottish Independence is timely, however. The rotating line-up will lead to some shows being stronger than others, so check the website before making your decision to attend. The final stand-up portion of the show likewise changes, so could also be of varying quality, and, like the earlier portion of the show, is dependent on the news providing adequate scope for material.
The Cabaret Voltaire, until 24 Aug, 12.05pm.
