Chastity Butterworth & The Spanish Hamster (Pajama Men Productions)
By Shiv Das | Published on Wednesday 21 August 2013
Firstly, the Spanish hamster only appears once, and very briefly. It’s not at all deserving of a place in the title. The whole show seems obtuse. The self-styled polite and posh Butterworth starts with tedious one-liners, including a forgetful and unoriginal knock knock joke. She ends randomly with “Chastity challenge”, involving an audience-based quiz about aspects of the show, which feels suspiciously like she’s just looking to fill up the rest of the hour. Unnecessarily offensive and full of drab toilet humour, she tries too hard to shock and amuse. Instead she just creates a cringe-worthy show, inconveniently played in the afternoon. She’s clearly a talented performer with a real air of confidence, it’s just a shame she’s lacking any actual comedy material.
Assembly Roxy, until 26 Aug, 5.45pm.
