Bob Slayer – Worldwide Bawbag (Pay What You Want / Heroes @ Bob’s Bookshop)
By Arjun Sajip | Published on Thursday 8 August 2013
The main victim of affable Bob’s ‘slaying’ is any comedic potential that might have arisen during 60 excruciating minutes in his bookshop. The ‘spoken-word’ show (semi-inebriated ramblings) began with casual interaction with the audience, punctuated by promises that ‘the show [hadn’t] started yet’. Unfortunately, the point at which ‘ramblings’ turned into ‘show’ was utterly indistinguishable. He carried on at a rate of – literally – one punchline per hour. At least David Brent is vaguely sympathetic because he desperately thinks he’s funny. Slayer is brazenly unfunny. I feel some reparations are in order for my aching jaw after an hour of fake-smiling. If Bob had put any effort whatsoever into his show, it might have been worth a visit. He didn’t, so it’s not.
Heroes @ Bob’s Bookshop, until 31 Aug (not 21, 27, 28), 4.45pm.
