Bob Doolally – A Life In Football (Bob Doolally / The Stand Comedy Club)
By Andrew Bell | Published on Thursday 22 August 2013
“It’s funnier if you’re pished,” Bob Doolally tells us, and I can only assume he’s right, because, while the rest of the audience are having a good time, I’m rather nonplussed. Doolally’s drunken ex-footballer turned “sports guru” has comic potential, but his approach to humour is confined to swearing, calling ex-footballers “mental” and occasional forays into a little, light racism. His improvised responses to audience questions are a brighter moment for the less than football obsessed, but they’re a small part of an overly long show with little else to appeal to non-fans. Two stars, but add a third if you’re a footie fan, and a fourth if you think “fucking Won-Ton” is a funny name for a Korean city.
The Stand Comedy Club III & IV, 12, 19 Aug, times vary.
