Alan Irwin – The Idiot Wind (Alan Irwin / Free Festival)
By Patricia-Ann Young | Published on Friday 9 August 2013
For almost its entirety, ‘Idiot Wind’ was the average, run-of-the-mill ‘young man does comedy’ shtick. It was full of ‘where I went wrong with women’ anecdotes, with the odd sex joke thrown in and a healthy dose of unhealthy lifestyle gags. For that section of the show, the material was good, but some stories had no decent pay-off and could have done with some fine-tuning to whip the jokes into shape. Without giving too much away, the end took a (perhaps premeditated) turn, ending in an awkwardly hysterical crescendo. Irwin is a capable and charismatic host, but it does feel like he is winging his own comedy show.
Laughing Horse @ The Phoenix, until 25 Aug (not 13), 5.00pm.
