Just So Stories (Yvonne Arnaud Theatre)
By Andrew Bell | Published on Thursday 22 August 2013
Come, oh best beloved, and I shall tell you how the ‘Just So Stories’ came to enchant and bewitch us all, young and old. From just sheets, light, movement and song sprang the perfectly gangly camel and his “humph”, the puppet mariner created with great resource and sagacity and barking, brilliant baboons. Sprinkling Kipling’s classic prose and poems with a dash of modern language, the young cast danced, prowled and enthralled with a skill to be envied by seasoned professionals. Switching quickly – but not too quickly – between storytelling, song, dance and magical fantasy, this play kept the attention of the audience throughout. And that, best beloved, is how children’s theatre should be done. Just so.
Gilded Balloon Teviot, until 25 Aug (not 22), 11.30am.
