Children’s Haunted Underground Tour (Auld Reekie Tours Ltd)
By Andrew Bell | Published on Tuesday 27 August 2013
In the dank, humid darkness of the South Bridge vaults, a handful of children refuse to sing Ring-A-Ring-A-Roses, for fear of waking the ghosts of plague victims. A ghostly walking tour for children – though there are no ghosts and not much walking – this is an interesting 45 minutes for adults and youngsters alike. The dripping limestone vaults are spookily atmospheric with being too scary and our Australian guide, Amy, keeps the children’s attention for the most part. The torture equipment at the start is a bit dull, however – it just looks like rusty metal – and the whole thing could stand to be just a bit more frightening. Nonetheless, this is still an educational, entertaining insight into Edinburgh’s hidden past.
Auld Reekie Tours – Meeting Point, until 26 Aug, 3.00pm.
