Beauty And The Beast (Paper Finch Theatre)

By | Published on Saturday 10 August 2013

‘Beauty And The Beast’ starts well, with a vamping, glitzy musical number, but rather loses its way after that. Although there are nice touches – the puppet frogs and Trotters the pig are endearing and amusing – the rest of the show is somewhat flat. Beauty’s excellent singing voice is drowned out by the music, the Beast is not beastly enough and the jokes are too few. Add to that a script that lingers too long on Beauty’s uninteresting home life but hurries past the vital falling in love part and you have a play that fails to engage, despite the odd good song. Ultimately, this is a show that needs more energy, more panto, much more monstrousness and less padding.

C, until 26 Aug (not 12), 3.00pm.
