Doug Segal: I Can Make You A Mentalist (Mick Perrin Worldwide)
By Victoria Beardwood | Published on Thursday 8 August 2013
Segal opened this show with such unbridled enthusiasm that I anticipated an unforgettable experience. The initial fervour soon waned though and a seemingly more panicked – though endearing – stage presence emerged. Starting with various tests to select the most psychically susceptible audience member, Segal guided them through a series of feats, including mind reading and clairvoyance. These psychic tricks were faultless, and I’m still finding it impossible to understand how he managed it, but unfortunately, the cheap gags and cheesy interactive pre-taped sketches undermined the impressive spectacle that Segal was working so hard to create. A technically successful and enjoyable show, which just didn’t blow me away.
Gilded Balloon Teviot, until 26 Aug (not 13), 6.30pm.
