Mark Grist – Rogue Teacher (Mark Grist / Escalator East To Edinburgh)
By Andy Leask | Published on Tuesday 21 August 2012
Chances are you’ve seen Mark Grist in action. He’s a YouTube sensation: his rap battle with Blizzard – ‘Cocky 17 year old gets ruined by his English Teacher’ – has millions of hits, trended on Reddit and even appeared on Channel 4 News. While this show undoubtedly showcases Grist’s lyrical prowess, don’t expect 60 minutes of misogyny and abuse of the audience’s mothers. Rather, we are treated to a brief jaunt through Grist’s life, focusing on his aspirations both as an educator, and as a wordsmith. Along the way, he shares a number of his poems. Grist is a passionate, engaging man; it’s easy to see why he was such an inspirational teacher, and why he’s such a successful performer.
Underbelly Cowgate, 2-26 Aug (not 14), 5.10pm.
