Flea Circus Open Slam (Tea Fuelled / PBH’s Free Fringe)

By | Published on Friday 31 August 2012

My experience of the beat-driven world of spoken word slams is limited, but the penultimate night of ‘Flea Circus Open Slam’ proved to be a great introduction. With seven performers fighting it out for a place in the next night’s final, topics included mixtapes, the 99%, pub condom machines and a very Yorkshire take on ‘The Iliad’, and five audience members were invited to act as independent judges. Taking a break from their normal Fringe roles as Killing Machines, hosts Jack and Nikki were just the right amount of kooky, and guest poets Harry Baker and Ben Mellor were breathtakingly good. The atmosphere at the gig was open and encouraging, managing to engage slam veterans and virgins alike.

The Banshee Labyrinth, 4-14 Aug, 7.30pm.
