Cheer Up! It’s Not The End Of The World… (Edinburgh Printmakers)

The exhibition book says that the apocalypse doesn’t mean total destruction but a process of rebirth, yet the images on display in this end-of-days themed exhibition suggest hard times ahead. The mangled bodies of broken statues and a library in ruins represent a break up of old traditions and certainties, and the fragility of culture. Money is usually to blame; bits of the Financial Times, stock market figures and banknotes are shredded to confetti. It’s all very gloomy – we’ll go out not with a bang but with a poor credit rating. However, there is a slideshow of classic apocalyptic images, including works by William Blake and Albrecht Durer, giving the end times a bit more grandeur.
