Catherine The Great – An Enlightened Empress (National Museum Of Scotland)

By | Published on Tuesday 21 August 2012

The life of Catherine the Great is an HBO TV series waiting to happen; the failed marriage, the lovers, illegitimate children, a rejected son. It’s also a blockbuster story of an ambitious woman rising to power against the odds. But it’s not just displays of wealth that give this exhibition its appeal (although her gaudy dressing table trinkets and ceremonial pistols are stunning). It is the stories of her amazing life, such as her cross-dressing in military uniform to launch a coup against her husband, or her flirtation with great enlightenment thinkers. The exhibition is a really accessible introduction to the thrilling narrative, and the artefacts on display are not to be missed.

National Museum Of Scotland, 13 Jul-21 Oct (10.00am-5.00pm), £9.00 entry.
