You Left Me In The Dark (Spun Glass Theatre)

Inspired by Chekhov’s ‘The Seagull’, this web of unrequited love is drunkenly recounted from Masha’s memories. Consequently our interpretation of events is continually evolving as scenes are redone differently with added significance. However this can make some plot points unclear: it’s probably not good if the audience leaves unsure if a main character is alive or dead. Likewise it is very cleverly produced with the use of projections, song and repeated speeches but sometimes this can go too far and starts to bore. Best of all is the interaction between the two girls in the love triangle; there’s some lovely bitchiness going on here yet the similarity of their feelings is also stressed. Overall a moving and reflective examination of love.
