What The Heart Remembers – The Women And Children Of Darfur (University Of South Florida – International Collegiate Theatre Festival)

By | Published on Friday 31 August 2012

The Sudanese civil war that resulted in South Sudan’s independence had a death toll of over two million. This interpretive theatre piece by the University Of South Florida explores the emotions in the continuing guerilla conflict in Darfur, though not the specific nature of the war. As the cast use dancing, singing and chants, Sudan becomes an incomprehensible hell in the company’s devised production, with soldiers as the demons. The result is rather broad strokes, preventing questions about the legitimacy of a violent response to brutality during a civil war, and instead focuses on non-complicit victims. The production is definitely emotive, though mostly proves that the wound is still too raw for anything much more than weeping.
