Well Behaved Women Rarely Make History (Spanner In The Works Theatre Company)

Patricia Downey’s text presents three monologues of women in recent history whose names have provoked a variety of responses. Indeed, with a superstar, a politician and a convict in the line-up, this makes for stimulating viewing. Caroline Curran’s performance is readily engaging; while her interpretation of Marilyn Monroe lacks charisma, as Mo Mowlam she is bold and funny, and her performance as Aileen Wuornos, a woman convicted of killing seven men she claimed had attempted to rape her while she worked as a prostitute, is the sharpest and most convincing of the three. Although the ‘hard-hitting and controversial’ aspect promised in the programme remains somewhat absent, this is an imaginative exploration of the minds of these three women.
