ED2012 2/5 Reviews ED2012 Theatre Reviews
Tokyo Trilogy (Sackville Theatre Company)
By Joe Mountford-Smith | Published on Thursday 23 August 2012
This comical play adapts three of Haruki Murakami’s short stories for the stage and if you’ve never heard of this Japanese novelist or read his work, you’ll probably find this show confusing. The story follows six actors who are getting to grips with modern Japan, but the changeovers between the separate tales aren’t indicated clearly enough and I got lost easily while the Japanese setting wasn’t always clearly conveyed either. Creative use of props impressed however, and one stand-out incident with a tape recorder got a big laugh, though I felt the humorous elements would have benefited from a stronger narrative voice and structure. More acting experience and professionalism may be required to fully realise the intended dramatic devices promised by this show.
