Theseus And The Minotaur – A Love Story (The Elements World Theatre)

By | Published on Friday 31 August 2012

The creators of this play must have thought that what Greek mythology needed was to be sexed up a little. So they threw in some tenuously-linked flamenco dancing and, with their psychological reworking, have bastardised a classic. An (intentionally) farcical opening slips into a farcically bad examination of Theseus and the Minotaur’s “psyches” and their relationship. Admittedly it’s an interesting premise but it wasn’t delivered well. What would be average acting is made to look clumsy beside Mayte Beltran’s gracefulness and sensuality, whose dances to Peter Strandberg’s exquisite music are the only two redeeming qualities of this play. The script was cliché-ridden and the introduction of verse towards the end only served to underline just how contrived the whole thing was.
