There’s Absolutely Nothing Wrong With Oscar Pike (Get A Real Job Promotions)

Geeky, gawky Oskar has some very familiar problems. Stories of struggling, socially awkward writers pining for women who are far too good for them are common for obvious reasons, but this one is strangely effective, despite some flaws. A little rough around the edges, the production would benefit from tighter dialogue and cleaner staging. While the young cast sometimes struggle to maintain the necessary energy, a steady drip feed of weary asides and low key humour slowly reveal each character to be equally alone and equally self deluded, effectively creating a surprising, sympathetic depth. Paul Richards’ turn as Pike is particularly convincing, somehow genuinely likeable despite his weary, selfish cynicism. Like its central character, this play remains oddly charming.
