The Yellow Wallpaper (Room 37)

By | Published on Friday 31 August 2012

‘The Yellow Wallpaper’ could easily have been adapted into a one woman monologue, and that could have worked well, but it might have have been boring; instead this production took the risk of using the symbolism and meaning behind the text to create something better. A group of actresses play the heroine, speaking in and out of sync with each other. And, for the most part, it works. The visual elements of the production work well too, the women in layers of drifting clothes, noticeably yellow gowns. It’s strange, a little hypnotic, and completely in keeping with the tone and theme of the novel. However, because of this reliance on the viewers knowing the text, anyone who doesn’t is going to be lost.
