The Weigh In (A&E Theatre Company)

By | Published on Friday 31 August 2012

Made with good intentions, this is a play designed to educate. A cross section of society is introduced, each member with a different eating disorder. They’re sent together to a clinic to be cured, and along the way they discover themselves, and explain to us, the audience, why they are the way they are. All this would be fine, except the show tries far too hard to be educational. As a result the characters don’t feel human enough – they’re more a condensed embodiment of the mental health issues they each represent – and when they are needed to act outside of their condition, especially in more dramatic moments, it all leans towards cliché. In fact the best bits were the jokes which, while a little hit or miss, were still far more original than the drama.

theSpace on North Bridge, 6.40pm.
