The Merry Wives Of Osaka (Akagumi)

By | Published on Friday 31 August 2012

Sitting through this was my own version of ‘Lost in Translation’: from beginning to end I had almost no idea what was going on. This was 100 per cent due to the fact that the play was in Osaka Japanese dialect. There was the occasional piece of commentary in English, but it wasn’t enough to make the situation clear. ‘The Merry Wives of Osaka’ is definitely a niche production; If you enjoy, un-naturalistic acting, especially slapstick comedy, (or can speak Japanese) this is for you. I doubt that this production would even appeal to children (it is a play aimed at a family market) because fundamentally, this simple story is badly told.
