The Mermaid Of Zennor (Bear Pit)

By | Published on Friday 31 August 2012

Based on the Cornish legend, Bear Pit’s drama is at once pleasurably eerie and beautifully sinister. With minimal props and artificial effects, the cast manage to thrust us into the deep seas around Zennor with ease, and smoothly evoke the small town psyche on a small stage. Religion is provocative in the mermaid’s tale; love and affection proves to be too powerful for superstition, climaxing with a frightening scene of Holy Communion. The love between the two central characters, the bookish dreamer Matthew and the enchantress outsider Mermaid, is most prominent, perhaps too much so: some of the other central characters are underused and undefined. However, ‘The Mermaid Of Zennor’s reverence for the sea is clear, in all its terrifying beauty.
