The Letters Of Jane Austen (Uncontained Arts)
By Lisa Clarkson | Published on Friday 31 August 2012
Letters from beloved author Jane Austen to her most beloved sister Cassandra are recited with great care, delight and respect in this simply-presented production by Uncontained Arts. Just two ladies of equal zest and zeal, dressed in lace caps and smocks, share selected private tales with a full audience, interspersed with a jaunty score. The selection could have been better; of the many letters in existence we were given perhaps some of the more trite, such as hungover Jane complaining of a dreadful headache, or catty Jane gossiping about fellow débutantes – the word ”fat” was mentioned at least three times (though that did raise a few laughs). But that said, as Jane says of one society party, this gathering was perfectly tolerable.
