The Importance Of Being Earnest (FramBag Theatre)

By | Published on Friday 31 August 2012

If a show kicks off with a fully cross-dressed cast singing ‘Sexy and I know it,’ it’s pretty clear what the audience is in for. Certainly not the new take on gender politics their listing describes, this is more of a school pantomime: admittedly funny in parts but somehow even shallower than the light hearted script intends. The ensemble are spirited but uneven, and while they display a talent for sight gags and projectile tea spitting, you’re often uncomfortably aware of their inexperience. Heavy on saucy vamping, they lack the timing or subtlety to do justice to Wilde’s wit. With a little polish, the eager enthusiasm here may well mature, but this performance remains too frivolous to really satisfy.

Greenside, 13-18 Aug, 2.35pm.
