ED2012 4/5 Reviews ED2012 Theatre Reviews
The Hole (American High School Theatre Festival)
By Jessamine McHugh | Published on Friday 17 August 2012
A politician, a professor and a preacher looking into a hole sounds like the set-up for a bad joke, but it is actually the premise for this brilliant adaptation of N Simpson’s absurdist play. As the different characters gaze into the mysterious abyss, they become absorbed by what they believe they see, but our own attention is directed to the nature of belief itself. Each element in this amateur production has been carefully thought out, so that even seemingly minute details highlight a new aspect of the writing, as is explained in the Q&A afterwards. All the actors give sterling performances, although better enunciation would benefit such a complicated play.
Church Hill Theatre, 7-11 Aug (not 9), times vary.
