The Erpingham Camp (Fourth Monkey)

By | Published on Friday 24 August 2012

Joe Orton’s 1966 play is invigorated in this production. A company could too easily treat it as a period piece, but here the characters all feel like people you could meet tomorrow. We are greeted as we make our way to our seats, creating that sense of a Butlin’s trip from the outset and there are continual references to members of the audience, making us feel like visitors to their holiday camp. Sam Adamson as Erpingham provides the right mixture of tyranny and pedantry for the others to react to. Those moments without Orton’s words to power them along are equally successful; music played over the system gets the right tone of faux-grandeur and the fight scenes are wonderfully comic. Overall, a very sound interpretation.
