The Disintegration Loops (Dark Hills Productions)

By | Published on Friday 24 August 2012

There’s always something sad about a clown. Dark Hills take this idea and push it to extremes with a show that’s the very definition of tragicomedy. The story centres on the patrons of a condemned community centre and the firm due to demolish it. As we learn more about these characters, what begins as outright farce gradually darkens. Soon the silly puns and sight gags give way to something bleaker, and we witness a transformation into touchingly truthful tragedy. The performance uses a blend of the exaggerated physicality of Commedia with the melodramatic diatribes of Greek theatre to explore the surprising similarities between these forms. What’s more, it’s a sophisticated comment on the fine line between tears and laughter.
