The Crucible (Close Up Theatre)
By Andrew Bell | Published on Friday 31 August 2012
Envy, lust and vengeance combine into a deadly hysteria in Arthur Miller’s classic play. Although a compelling story, ‘The Crucible’ was a poor choice for the Close Up youth theatre group, as the cast didn’t have the presence or range to bring Miller’s dark tale to life. Instead, the performances were too often one note – “I am EMOTING!” – and the two and half hour run time dragged on. That said, Samuel Metcalfe as the righteous Judge Danforth and Eleanor Williams as the manipulative Abigail Williams showed promise and versatility. In the end, however, this was a difficult play that was always going to be out of the reach of an inexperienced cast.
