The Browning Version (HOGHEAD Theatre)

By | Published on Monday 20 August 2012

A neat production of Terence Rattigan’s 1948 play by a youthful theatre group, ‘The Browning Version’ proves to be a rather good vehicle for the young actors to demonstrate their range. Anders Jay is particularly interesting as Andrew Crocker-Harris, a retiring public school teacher who has become accustomed to being disliked by pupils and overlooked by fellow teachers. It’s a difficult role for a young performer to truly occupy, not just physically but in terms of the emotional terrain, and yet he is convincing and sympathetic. The play lacks a satisfying ending, but it is sharp material and the cast do a good job of tackling the suppressed raging emotion as well as the humour.
