The Agony And The Ecstasy Of Steve Jobs (Gilded Balloon)

By | Published on Friday 31 August 2012

Mike Daisey’s funny and poignant play addresses the life of Steve Jobs by focusing on two different stories, one on the creation and changing face of Apple and one on the writer’s own trip to China where the products are made, and the sweatshops he found them being created in. While it is performed by Grant O’Rourke, it feels very much like a personal monologue, as the actor is emotional and believable. The writing is at times amusing and often quite shocking, as we learn of Daisey’s interviews with the Chinese workers and the appalling conditions they found themselves in. An affecting and powerful play and one that will stick in the mind for a long time after it has been watched.

Gilded Balloon Teviot, 1-27 Aug (not 14), 2.15pm.
