The Adult History Of Great Britain Part 1 – Free (Market Theatre Company / Laughing Horse Free Festival)
By Andy Leask | Published on Friday 10 August 2012
Despite the personable comediennes’ performances, I’m left hoping there’s no part 2. This show – mis-marketed as Theatre, not comedy – takes the form of an “all singing, all dancing, all bollocks” romp through British history. Sadly, much of the humour is forced, and falls flat – it is in the interplay between the performers (rather than the characters they represent) that it mostly finds its feet. There are highlights, of course: a primary school teacher ticking off the soldiers post-Battle of Hastings was very funny, but there just weren’t enough laughs. Worst of all were the overlong, unfunny musical numbers, that served to disrupt the rhythm and disrupt any comic momentum that had been building.
