That Face (Middle Peg Theatre Company)

Alcoholism, drug abuse, quasi-incestuous relationships… Polly Stenham’s award winning 2007 play is not exactly a barrel of laughs. It should be a really powerful piece of theatre, but unfortunately the young cast here lack the maturity and experience to properly do it justice. Whilst they are by no means terrible, they consistently fail to convince in the more dramatic scenes, often opting just to heighten their volume rather than their emotions. With the exception of Kat Stevens, who is actually pretty good in the role of an alcoholic, emotionally abusive mother, they are frequently wooden and at times vaguely irritating. They show enough promise to suggest they may improve, but for now they’ve bitten off more than they can chew.
