ED2012 4/5 Reviews ED2012 Theatre Reviews
Tartuffe (American High School Theatre Festival)
By Khristine Gallagher | Published on Friday 31 August 2012
This highly original adaptation of Molliere’s farcical play is transported into the 1960s and combines brilliant attention to detail with intelligent execution. Almost at professional standards, this bright young cast showcases acting talent of a high calibre. Keeping the original translation, including Gywneth Bruch’s rhyming couplets, the play is still quick-paced and snappy, as Orgon is taken advantage of by Tartuffe, a hippy posing as a devout religious leader, who brings hordes of his cult followers with him. This may be a little off-putting due to the slightly modern settings, although the aforementioned attention to detail and brilliant performances by the cast give this classic play a refreshingly new light.
