Story Shakespeare – All’s Well That Ends Well (Year Out Drama Company – Stratford-Upon-Avon)

By | Published on Friday 31 August 2012

To suitably incorporate the words ”ET phone home” and Ben Affleck into an adaptation of Shakespeare’s ‘All’s Well That Ends Well’ is a feat in itself, and, like Baz Luhrmann’s film ‘Romeo and Juliet’, this production succeeds in making Shakespeare more accessible to a modern audience. It is pleasing to see that Shakespeare’s language is not entirely abandoned, however; regular influxes of modern expressions tend to belittle the play. Stage entrances and exits are made through the audience, effectively drawing them into the performance, and there are elements of good comedy thrown in, the camp and highly dubious Parolles for example, is brilliantly comical. If you like Shakespeare but want a shorter, less heavy-going adaptation then this is the perfect show.
