Spaghetti Junction (This Egg / Kindling)

There is almost something special about this sweet little reflection on growing up. Almost. The audience are brought into the anticipation of a child’s surprise party – complete with hats and balloons – but it turns out that the birthday girl is a grown-up, working in an office, and the party’s being thrown by Andi, a girl with severely arrested development. There are some lovely moments of humour and drama, and some innovative movement, as we flit back and forth from childhood to pseudo-adulthood, but the whole somehow fails to engage. The conclusion, questioning what it means to grow up, lacks impact; the writing itself feels very juvenile. While there’s undoubtedly a certain irony there, I sense it is unintentional.

Bedlam Theatre, 13-18 Aug, 12.30pm.
