Sophie Shadow (Yvonne Arnaud Theatre)

A family hide in a chamber in an attempt to isolate themselves from the outer world. However interesting, the subject matter became unconvincing, as clichés such as the power of the imagination and storytelling prevailed. Although at times beautiful and well-crafted, the intermittent stories did little to convey urgency or desperation, undermining the gravity of the situation with light-hearted riffs on the ukulele. It was difficult to understand the relationship between the myriad stories (apart from their ending in isolation) and they quickly grew wearisome. Furthermore, one could not empathise with the plight of the family, whose reason for seclusion still remained ambiguous after an hour of half-hearted, shadowy storytelling.

Paradise in The Vault, 14-26 Aug (not 20), 3.35pm.
