Sister Annunciata’s Secret (Nonnie Griffin)

By | Published on Friday 31 August 2012

With so many revelations in recent years of child abuse in the church, this story of a nun’s inappropriate relationship with a talented young pupil seems especially relevant. Yet this is more about forbidden passion than perversion: Nonnie Griffin’s portrayal is such that we never think of her as a monster, but rather as a woman pushed beyond endurance by factors she can’t control. Griffin breathes life into all the roles in this one-woman show, but the plot gets muddled and it is unclear at which point in the chronology the opening scenes take place. Instead of casting doubt on those within the church, it raises points about organised religion’s ability to help and support individuals.

Hill Street Theatre, 15-26 Aug, 4.15pm.
