Shakespeare Didn’t Write This (Lip Theatre Company)
By Paige Wilson | Published on Friday 31 August 2012
A play about a group of incompetent, uncoordinated actors who put on a play at the Fringe, this tale seems sadly too autobiographical. Like a GCSE Drama performance that didn’t manage a good grade, the show combines simple, undeveloped characters with an immature script and attempts at humour that are met only with silence. With its dialogue about how bad the play within the play is, ‘Shakespeare Didn’t Write This’ constantly draws attention to itself, and generates the feeling that it’s attempting to excuse and justify its poor quality at every turn. Boring, muddled and slouchy, the play both figuratively and literally exhibits the delusion of wannabe actors who would be better off not bothering at all.
Sweet Grassmarket, 10-24 Aug (not 14), 1.10pm.
