Rubber Dinghy (Rubber Dinghy)
By Dave Fargnoli | Published on Friday 31 August 2012
Two bankrupt bankers fleeing their past end up stranded in this original short play. Though we learn little about these characters, they are played consistently and believably; the one full of practical plans for the future, the other visibly deranged by dehydration. Both are unable to escape the lives they’ve left behind, here personified by an aquatic cabaret singer with an admittedly haunting voice. She’s accompanied by live music and playful sound effects, but these don’t permeate the play in the way they should. A general lack of narrative direction and a rushed finale only muddy the waters further, despite a fine premise and solid performances. Still, while it flounders towards the end, at least this production isn’t lost at sea.
