Round ‘ere (The Richard Burton Company)
By Lia Sanders | Published on Friday 31 August 2012
If you live a comfortable middle-class existence it becomes easy to make self-righteous judgements about those “less fortunate”. In this fast moving 30 minute piece, written and performed by Katherine Pearce, these assumptions are challenged. The first surprise comes in the form of an informed critique of David Cameron’s current policies, this after some park bench drinking and cigarette blagging, and a short monologue extolling the joys of getting drunk. While she rails quite a bit against stereotyping by those in power of the Northern working-class, Pearce’s character is not just an angry young woman, she also regales us with stories of family, love and hardship in witty verse. Although its brevity makes it seem a bit like a taster, ‘Round ‘ere’ still leaves you questioning your opinions on “Northern chavs”.
